Should I cover my outdoor unit in the winter?line graphic

Covering the unit is not necessary. Units are manufactured to withstand all climate changes. Rain in fact helps to keep your unit clean. Heat pumps should never be covered because they run all year long.

How close to the outdoor unit should I plant shrubs or flowers?? What about a fence? line graphic

Manufacturers agree and LOYAL agrees when planting shrugs, flowers or any other type of plant be at least 18 inches from the unit. To operate efficiently, air conditioners need to take in air and exhaust air and if air is unable to circulate, the unit could build up heat and become damaged which then requires service. Your service professional also needs to have room to perform work on the unit. It is not recommended that fences be constructed around air conditioning units for many reasons. The fence will allow weeds and grass to grow which may interfere with the function of the unit. Additionally, a fence does not leave room for your service professional to work. If you are thinking of a fence to protect the unit from theft or vandalism, wire cutters sufficient to cut through the fencing is all this is necessary to gain access to the unit.

My indoor unit works fine but I may need a new outdoor unit. Should I replace the entire system or just the outdoor unit?? What are the advantages?line graphic

The entire system - air conditioning units and furnaces (and also heat pumps) are designed to match with each other. Efficiency ratings are given for the entire system. Technology changes are constantly occurring in the manufacturing of the units to ensure system efficiency and comfort. By replacing only one part, the older parts may not match the current technology of the new part thus not allowing the unit to operate at peak efficiency. Replacing your entire system means you will be less likely to need service in the near future other than normal maintenance. Additionally, the cooling coil on the indoor system may be partially blocked and that decreases efficiency.

Is a new air conditioning system costly? line graphic

Many factors must be considered in deciding to purchase a new system: efficiency, home size, duct work already installed and is it in good condition, and is a thermostat or electronic air cleaner needed. So the answer is "it depends." Replacing your entire system (in/outdoor components) result in a longer lasting and more efficient system but of course it costs a little more. LOYAL would be happy to inspect and give an estimate as well as discuss the current condition of your system with you.

Do I need to think about the refrigerant when buying a system?line graphic

All residential air conditioning systems contain a refrigerant (otherwise known as an HCFC or specifically R-22). This refrigerant is environmentally safe, efficient and available as long as your new system lasts. The US Environmental Protection Agency has recently made certain rulings which requires changes be made to refrigerants but not until the year 2020.

How often should filters be changed or cleaned? line graphic

It is recommended that filters be replaced every month when the system is operating. Always replace the filters with the same kind and size as the original. If the filter is not disposable we recommend you follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning.

Are there any advantages to setting the thermostat fan to the "ON" position versus "AUTOMATIC?"line graphic

When in the "ON" position, the fan is constantly filtering air in your home. Because of this the air is constantly moving and you will have more of an even temperature throughout the home. If in the "AUTOMATIC" position air is only filtering through your home when the air conditioning unit is running.

What about humidity in my home, will anything help control it?line graphic

The best way to control excessive humidity in areas of your home is to have a system which runs longer at lower speeds. Variable speed air handling equipment operates at very low speeds and keeps air circulating against the cooling coil. It also removes more moisture than conventional systems. When operating at low speeds the variable speed motor uses much less electricity than that of conventional motors.

What is the difference between a Manufacturer's Limited Warranty and an Extended Parts and Labor Warranty?line graphic

Limited Warranties are provided by the manufacturer, cover specific components (i.e. compressor, coil, electronics, etc.) and is limited by the language of the warranty. An Extended Warranty is purchased separately and in addition to the equipment to cover parts and may include labor for a service call. As with any warranty, the language in both cases is what dictates terms and coverage. An Extended Warranty also offers protection from unexpected and unbudgeted service calls for the duration of the warranty.
